Roel van Daal (1963) kiest de onderwerpen voor zijn schilderijen niet vanwege hun verschijningsvorm, maar om de beleving die ze bij hem oproepen. Juist een onbekende vorm kan een gevoel van herkenning oproepen, en dat is het uitgangspunt dat deze kunstenaar fascineert.
In zijn meest recente werk kiest Van Daal het straatbeeld als hoofdmotief. Enerzijds doen zijn beelden wat onpersoonlijk aan omdat de mensen op zijn doeken allen onbekenden zijn; anderzijds roepen zij juist een vertrouwd gevoel op omdat we allemaal bekend zijn met dergelijke anonieme passanten. Bovendien kiest de kunstenaar bekende locaties als een terras aan het Amsterdamse Rembrandtplein of een bekende winkelstraat in Parijs als zijn toneel.
Het handschrift waarmee Van Daal zijn beelden in heldere toetsen opbouwt, is eveneens herkenbaar en karakteristiek. De kunstenaar beheerst de suggestie van licht met verf in hoge mate; het is vooral de werking van het licht die voor de specifieke sfeer in zijn werk zorgt.

Roel van Daal (1963) does not choose the subject for his paintings because of their appearance but due to the perception it summons up in him. An unfamiliar shape is exactly what is caopable of summoning a feeling of recognition and it is just this foundation that fascinates the artist.
Van Daal chooses street scenes as the key theme for his most recent works. In one respect the images come across as impersonal because the people on his canvases are all unknown; yet in another respect they summon a feeling of familiarity because we are all familiar with these kind of anonymous passers-by. Furthermore, the artist chooses well known locations such as an outdoor cafe on the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam or a shopping street in Paris as his stage.
he signature with which Van Daal composes his images in clear toetsen, is just as recognisable as it is characteristic. To a high degree, the artist masters the suggestion of light in paint; it is mainly the working of light that provides the specific atmosphere in his work.
