Wessel Huisman studeerde af in economische en sociale geschiedenis voordat hij naar de kunstacademie ging. Aan de academie waar hij studeerde - de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Arnhem - is hij, naast zijn kunstenaarschap, werkzaam als adjunct-directeur. In zijn schilderwerk is Huismans achtergrond als historicus duidelijk zichtbaar.
Huisman heeft in zijn atelier door de jaren heen een groot archief aangelegd van historische beelden. Deze ansichtkaarten en foto’s vormen een essentieel onderdeel van het materiaal waarmee hij zijn kunstwerken creëert. In zijn schilderijen beeldt Huisman zowel bekende historische momenten uit als beelden uit het verleden van alledag, zoals het leven van boeren en arbeiders. Huisman geeft zijn verhouding tot het verleden vorm met verf op doek. Maar het is de sfeer die zijn schilderijen uitstralen die het werk van Huisman het meest karakteriseert.
Met zijn kleurgebruik - Huisman schildert in gedempte, lichte kleuren uit eenzelfde bruingrijs kleurgamma - wordt het historische karakter van het afgebeelde voelbaar. Ook al gaat Huisman in beginsel uit van historische beelden, zijn uiteindelijke schilderijen zijn autonome op zichzelf staande kunstwerken. Na een proces van zorgvuldige verfbehandeling en studie van kleur, compositie en ritme, ontstaan gelaagde schilderijen vol licht en transparantie. De verschillende witten contrasteren sterk met de donkere vlakken in sepia. De beelden lijken helder, maar details blijven vaag. Personen zijn herkenbaar, maar hun gezichten niet. Dit voor zijn werk zo kenmerkende aspect draagt bij tot een haast nostalgische en romantische ervaring - een gevoel dat ook het verleden zélf niet zelden oproept.

Wessel Huisman completed a study in economical and social history before attending the art academy. Besides making use of his artistic calling he is also employed as deputy headmaster at the academy where he studied - The Arnhem Academy of Art and Design. Huisman’s background as a historian is clearly visible in his artwork.
Through the years Huisman has built up a huge archive of historical images in his studio. These postcards and pictures form an essential part of the material he uses to create his artwork. Huisman portrays well-known historical moments in his paintings as well as everyday images from the past, such as the lives of farmers and labourers. Huisman gives his relationship to the past form using paint on canvas, but it is the atmosphere that his paintings evoke that really characterizes Huisman’s work.
Due to his use of colour - Huisman paints in subdued, light colours using the same brown grey colour spectrum - the historical character of the depiction becomes tangible. Although Huisman starts, in principle, with historical images the final paintings are autonomous individual works of art. After the process of meticulous paint handling and the study of colour, composition and rhythm, a layered painting full of light and transparency is created. The various shades of white contrast highly with the dark sepia surface areas. The images seem clear but the details remain vague. People are recognizable but their faces are not. This typical aspect of his work contributes to an almost nostalgic and romantic experience - a feeling that often summons up the past itself.
