Sven Hoekstra (1945) schildert met olieverf op paneel in een uiterst zorgvuldige, verfijnde stijl. Zijn werk intrigeert door het contrast tussen figuur en decor. Merkwaardige, enigszins karikaturale mensfiguren bewegen zich tegen een traditioneel Hollands landschap. Het is alsof de schilder, bezig met het vastleggen van het landschap, deze personages als het ware plotseling voor zijn lens heeft gekregen. Het is onduidelijk hoe zij zich verhouden tot elkaar en tot hun omgeving. Zij maken een theatrale en extroverte indruk maar komen tegelijkertijd kwetsbaar en onbereikbaar over. Zij kijken de toeschouwer niet aan en elkaar evenmin. Het lijken carnavaleske passanten die, bepaald bij het moment, gevangen zijn in hun eigen vluchtige wereld. Het landschap waarin zij zich bewegen blijft stil en onaangedaan. Deze combinatie van tijdloos landschap en voorbijsnellende figuren, de spanning tussen cultuur en natuur, tussen tijd en ruimte maakt het werk van Hoekstra even vervreemdend als verrassend.

An intriguing contrast exists between the figures and the décor in his paintings. Extraordinary, somewhat caricature-like figures move around a traditional Dutch landscape. It is as if the painter, painting his landscape, suddenly discovered some figures ‘in front of his lens’. It remains unclear as to how they relate to each other or their surroundings. Theatrical and extravert yet at the same time they appear to be vulnerable and unapproachable. They do not look at the viewer or at each other. They seem like carnavalesque transients defined by the moment, captured in their own fleeting world. The landscape in which they find themselves remains tranquil and untouched by this event. This combination of timeless landscape and figures shooting past, the tension between culture and nature, between time and space make Hoekstra’s work just as strange as it is surprising.
